Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today the appointment of Ms. Amira Elghawaby as Canada’s first special representative for fighting Islamophobia. This appointment comes after an open call for candidates in June 2022 and a transparent and merit-based selection process.
Ms. Elghawaby, who is a human rights activist and expert on racism and discrimination, will be responsible for leading and strengthening Canada’s efforts to combat hate towards Muslims, systemic racism, racial discrimination, and religious intolerance.
During the announcement of the appointment, Prime Minister Trudeau stated: “Diversity is truly one of Canada’s greatest strengths. However, Islamophobia is a phenomenon that many Muslims are all too familiar with. We must change this. In our country, no one should be a victim of hate because of their faith. The appointment of Ms. Elghawaby as Canada’s first special representative for fighting Islamophobia is an important step in our fight against Islamophobia and hate in all its forms. I look forward to working with her to continue building a country where everyone feels safe and respected.”
Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion, Hon. Ahmed Hussen, also welcomed the appointment by stating: “In Canada, diversity is a reality but inclusion is a choice.
